VHF HDTV Antennas

The best known VHF antenna is "rabbit-ears" - a small, poor performing indoor thing. This antenna and other VHF indoors can work only if you live close to the towers. If you are located in weak signal areas, things on the VHF band are getting complicated. Deep fringe VHF antenna has to be big, and therefore heavy, difficult to install and expensive. That's very unfortunate but true (in UHF band though, you can get away with a much smaller antenna). Another point to remember is that the VHF band is splitted into lower (channels 2-6) and higher (channels 7-13) portions. These are two well separated frequency ranges. Simple indoor antennas cover both of them, but high end directional VHF antennas typically don't. If you are buying a VHF antenna make sure it covers the channels you need.

What is the VHF Band?

For starters, VHF is also known as very high frequency. These frequencies are well above that of hearing and radio. In the early days of television, 12 channels were dedicated to this frequency. Channels two through 13 usually consist of local channels that broadcast from nearby cities. If you have a satellite dish, you will still need an antenna that will detect the broadcasts of these 12 channels so that you can still receive network shows and programs of local importance to you. The majority of VHF antennas are those designed to be installed on a roof or other high point on your home. These outdoor antennas ensure the best possible reception.
