AntennasDirect 42XG Review #0
Rating: 1 (very poor) Nickname: still looking Date: 2009-10-19
Summary: Flimsy, fragile.
It doesn\t matter how well an antenna works - if it falls apart it\s worthless. I\ve read too many antenna reviews in which the reviewer mentions in passing having to repair or strengthen an antenna as if that\s to be expected. Shame on us for accepting poor quality! Both Terrestrial Digital 42XG\s delivered to me came broken in the box. No damage to the box. Some bent materials looked like they came from the factory that way. Other parts broke because there\s no internal packing to keep them from banging around in shipment. Pieces have continued to break off in four months of \use\, to the point where performance has suffered. In fairness, from what I read, poor build quality isn\t limited to the 42XG and seems to be a problem with many China made antennas. In terms of reception, it\s probably a good antenna but mine\s no good in pieces.

Rating: 4 (good) Nickname: Puget Viewer Date: 2009-06-15
Summary: Comparison with Antennas Direct DB-4
I bought both the Antennas Direct 42XG and DB-4 to replace my old hardware store “fringe” corner reflector Yagi. I settled on the DB-4. 42XG has very good gain, at least as good as the old antenna, but not as directional. DB-4 has only a little less gain than the 42XG in general, but was noticeably weaker in the lower frequencies, i.e. physical channels 14 to about 25. The DB-4 however had a larger beam width than the 42XG. The stations that I was trying to receive were separated by about 40 degrees. If the separation was 30 degrees or less, the 42XG is the one I would have stayed with. One website indicates that my stations range from 20-30 miles, power varies from -51 to -73 dBm, and an even mix of 1 and 2 edge diffraction. The 42 has a little more gain, is a little more directional, but has but better front-to-back attenuation. They are both compact, making them ideal for use in my attic. If I were to use a rooftop mount, honestly, I would go with something else from one of the top tier brands. Both came with 75 ohm matching balun as well as mast mounting hardware. The DB-4 required only basic tools and the 42XG needed no tools. The quality for each was acceptable, but not best in class. On both I had to bend the metal in a few places to get them back to where they were supposed to be. The plastic parts on the 42XG (they’re black, not orange) were inconsistently made, with some being very difficult to snap on to the boom. The DB-4 is frailer than the 42XG, but the mast mount on the 42 is all the way aft, creating a long cantilever that could be stressed excessively from snow or bird roosting. I give them both a 4 mostly due to manufacturing quality.

AntennasDirect 42XG Review #2
Rating: 2 (poor) Nickname: kevinedavis Date: 2010-03-07
Summary: Not very good
I bought this antenna to supplement a VHF antenna. It didn't pick up anything the VHF andenna didn't already get and combining them made the signal worse. This antenna alone didn't work as well on UHF as the VHF antenna! It was a little tough to put together and even harder to take apart and put in the box.

Rating: 3 (average) Nickname: joe_pool_is Date: 2010-02-24
Summary: No VHF
The description fails to tell you that this is only for UHF Channels. This is a medium range antenna. Search Google using "Antennas Direct 42XG". Better price here, though!

AntennasDirect 42XG Review #4
Rating: 5 (excellent) Nickname: anonymous Date: 2010-02-16
Summary: Very Nice HD Antenna
The reviews on this antenna were spot on! Easy assembly, all hardware needed for mounting to a shaft was included. Assembly and installation couldn't have been simpler. I needed to install an inline amplifier though (radio shack #15-1170) [...] to get a strong signal to the TV. The signal from the antenna directly to just one TV was fine, but once I split the antenna cable to feed 3 TVs the signal was very poor. A radio shack inline amplifier installed on the main feed line from the antenna (before the splitters) fixed up the signal nicely. Clear as a bell HD quality on all TV's...

I roughly aimed the antenna in the general direction of the Sutro TV TransmissionTower here in the SF Bay Area (~ 30 miles away). No tweaking needed for a good picture... AWSOME product. It will pay for itself in 1 month now that I have cancelled my cable TV suscription (~$63/mo for COMCAST basic cable here in the SF bay Area)
