AntennaCraft MXU59 Review #0
Rating: 5 (excellent) Nickname: RickCain Date: 2011-01-07
Summary: Big, but worth it
This antenna is very large, about 8\ long. Its made of aluminum and was shipped to me completely assembled except for end caps and some fixing bolts. You extend the reflectors, carefully turn the elements into locking position and then put fixing bolts in. The instructions are reasonably simple and mounting hardware is included. You still need to supply a mast and a 300 ohm balun matching transformer yourself though. The MXU-59 has a VHF passthrough so you can attach leads from a VHF antenna and not have to run 2 cables or use a split preamp. Wind loading is light and since its all aluminum its easy to pick up despite its size. I do recommend a strong mast however because its so big, preferably a tripod mount or a pole that goes all the way to the ground. This antenna is very good at rejecting signals from the back, so in multipath situations its useful. It has a narrow beamwidth, probably no more than 30 degrees so unless the transmitting tower is very close it won\t pick up much from the sides or back. While it only supports channels 14-69 it will pick up high VHF if the transmitting tower is of sufficient power, but don\t expect much since its not specifically engineered for receiving channels 7-13. I can pick up easily UHF from 35 miles away with strong 99-95% signal without a preamp. This is a good inexpensive antenna for red and blue zone reception, and it should do violet with a preamp.
