Which Omni directional antenna to choose??

Postby SteveF101 on Thu Sep 29, 2011 2:32 pm

Hey all,

Total newbie to the world of OTA and could really use some advice. I recently had a major temper tantrum at Comcast over their ever escalating cable bill and cancelled my service with them, it was AWESOME!!! One of the most enjoyable phone calls ever!

Anyhow, on to my problem. So last night I played around with my current antenna, a Phillips Silver sensor and made some rather (to me anyway :D ) interesting discoveries… In addition to where it was placed, it also mattered HOW it was placed. I had just brought in my window AC unit last week and was testing the antenna out last night on the shelf that the AC unit rested on in the window to see how much better a signal I could get with it outside instead of inside. While it was sitting there it tipped over and fell off the side and was hanging by the coax cable, I didn’t notice this when I was scanning for channels and testing signal strength, all of a sudden I was getting 6 bars which is the max signal strength on some channels that I was only getting two or three bars on and got about 4 new channels as well, woohoo!!. So I had my daughter hold it in different positions (she was TOTALLY thrilled  ) and found out that depending on how I placed it, I could get a solid 6 bars on all the channels I want to get including Fox, woohoo!!

So it looks like I don’t need to go with a full antenna like the 2448 that I was considering, but I do need a decent outdoor omni directional antenna. I want something that is easy to install with a small footprint and can be mounted to the side of the house, like the TERK FDTVO which is what I’m leaning towards, along with a signal booster if needed or perhaps something like the Winegard MS-2002, either can be mounted with a small pole that could be easily mounted to the side of the house.

At TvFool the map shows most of my channels in the NorthEast\NorthWest quadrants, so a directional one might work as well but would prefer not to deal with the rotor and all the rest of the hassle if the directional sweep is too tight - http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapp ... 22fc2bc9a3

I am at zip code 98002 and will only be running one TV off the signal. Where I live is in a valley and will be having the antenna about 20' off the ground, not a lot of trees or anything else nearby but there are a lot of hills and mountains.

Any advice for these type of antennas?

Thanks a lot, any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!

I strongly suggest that you repost your TVFool.com results using your exact address, rather than your generic zip code, and the territory in your area is very hilly, and the results are likely to be somewhat different that what you have posted. TVFool will NOT post your address online, so your privacy is ensured.

I almost never recommend omnidirectional antenna because, by their design, they do not reject multipath, which is the bane of digital TV reception. You live in a high-multipath area, and wouldn't be likely to have very good luck with an omnidirectional antenna.

Once I have your exact TVFool.com report, I can better advise you.
