Which Indoor Medium Omni? (Green)

Postby klutz_atlantis on Thu Apr 17, 2008 3:47 pm

Hello:

I recently got a laptop and for it I purchased an analog, digital, and FM tuner card. I hooked up the antenna the came with it and it was apparently just for "testing" purposes. I also hooked up the "BIG" directional antenna we have here at home, but for some reason the tuner picks up less channels than my regular analog television. I've been looking around at it seems I'm in the "green" region and about 40 (37.5)miles from the furthest tower I would like to pick up. I'm looking from channels 5-66, so that would mean UHF/VHF? I'm looking for an Indoor Medium/"green" Omni antenna? Would the Terk TV-5 be appropriate for my needs?

thanks,

Yes

Well, I doubt TV-5 can do the job. Green zone in 40 miles distance is pretty tough for an indoor antenna, and TV-5 is far from being the best indoor. I would say that 40 miles is tough even for an outdoor omni-directional antenna. I would go for an outdoor directional aerial with a rotator if necessary.

If an indoor antenna is the only possibility for you, take a look at AntennasDirect DB2. Keep in mind though, that it is directional and UHF-only. It will have "okay" performance on higher VHF, i.e. channels 7-13.

Are there any good outdoor ariels that aren't overly big that would maybe be a better solution? I can't but something outside, but probably not on the roof.

thanks in advance,

It looks like Winegard SS-2000 may fit your needs. It is not very strong on VHF, so it depends how far your VHF stations are.

Another option is to go with AntennasDirect DB2. It can be placed either indoors or outdoors. If it works for you indoors - fine. If not, hang it outside as high as you can.
