Which antenna to buy to go in attic

Postby mamono on Tue Mar 02, 2010 12:39 am

I had a Channel Master CM-4228HD antenna a while back which I used until DirecTV finally got the Portland HD channels. It worked okay but occasionally FOX would cut out, which I now realize is because FOX is VHF (at the time I thought all HD was UHF.) Now I'm looking at getting rid of DirecTV and want to get my HD OTA. The area I live in can get pretty windy at times and it was always nerve-racking hearing the antenna creaking on the roof. So, this time around I want to mount it inside my attic. I'm looking at either the Channel Master Crossfire CM3671 or the Winegard HD8200U.

The Winegard is rated for 65 miles and the CM 100. Since Portland is only 29 miles away I'm thinking this should do the trick, am I correct? Would I still need a pre-amp? I will be hooking up at least three, possibly four Tivos to it, both with dual tuners.

Also, what is the difference between a pre-amp and a distribution amp? Would I need the distribution amp to get to all my TVs?

Thanks

Sorry, here is additional information:

My ZIP code is 97055
I live in a residential neighborhood and my neighborhood is higher up than most of the rest in town. There are some hills involved but if I stood on my roof with, say, an 8-foot ladder and a telescope (or strong binoculars) I could see Portland. (Not that I would ever put a ladder on my roof, but I've been up high enough to know that would work)
I understand about the limitations of indoor antennas but I'm looking to use a powerful outdoor antenna inside my attic. The attic walls are uninsulated and are just plywood with Hardiplank.
