What am I doing wrong

Postby wiscvis on Tue Aug 25, 2009 10:42 am

I own a Cabin in the Hayward Wisconsin area, zip 54843. Lat 46.096491 Long -91.475995 All stations I am trying to receive have towers very close together (327.6/.8 degrees), but they are 58 miles away. The stations available are:
UHF 3.1 RF 33, UHF 6.1 RF 19, UHF 21.1 RF 17, VHF 8.1 RF 8, VHF 10.1 RF 10
There are several large trees in the direction of the towers, but they are not extremely dense. I currently have a Winegard HD8200U with an AP8275 Pre Amp about 38 ft in the air. I used to receive most of the stations in digital, but now I only get 8.1. I thought the Pre Amp must have gone bad, so I replaced it along with the coax with no better results. I contacted the stations and they are currently broadcasting at full power. I have re-scanned continually with no help. I have 3 tv's, 1 with a converter box, 2 Digital. I thought about purchasing a quality UHF only antenna, but then I would lose the only station I receive if it didn't work. Any help would be appreciated.

A couple of thoughts here: One ; how long ago did you rescan your digital tuner: some of the channels moved their frequencies back on June 12, and that may be one reason why you are having trouble. Two; pull out your compass, and be sure that your antenna is aimed properly: TVFool.com says that you should be aimed at 328 degrees by your compass. If your antenna drifted, that would account for some of your trouble. Rescan anytime that you move the antenna.

I have moved the antenna in very small amounts each direction from 327.6 (or as close to that as I can tell) then re scanned each time. The part that makes me wonder about the antenna is that 8.1, 8.2, 8.3 come in with REALLY good power and 10.1 is just below "GOOD" on the signal meter, but no UHF. Is VHF a stronger signal?

VHF signals follow the curve of the earth better than UHF, and also get around hills a little better, but if you are seeing NO UHF, then I believe that you may have another problem. I think that you ought to consider adding a rotator to your system to make finding the other stations easier, however

If I were to try a UHF only antenna, what would you suggest? I have looked at the Wineguard HD 7698P, but the UHF specs on it don't look as good as on the HD8200. I have also looked at the Antennas Direct 91XG but they don't show specs. What are your thoughts on these, or any others?

Sorry, I meant the Winegard HD9095P (UHF only), the HD7698P also has high VHF, although If you think the 7698 may work, it would cover all stations.

An HD7698P is nothing more than an HD8200U without low-band VHF capability: you'll gain nothing from that.
