VHF/UHF antenna

I need help in figuring the best course to go on. I'm looking at getting rid of Direct TV, and buying an antenna, but want to install it inside the attic to receive UHF/VHF signals, should I buy seperate antennas? Do I need an amplifier? I have a 2 story house, so in the Attic it'll be off the ground approx 18', the distance to the upstairs TV monitor is approx 8', the 1st floor run will be less than 40'. I'm hoping to get one good antenna, that isnt too large. Would a HBU44 be good, or should I go Winegard 7696? The winegard is on the large end.
Please help!
