Unidirectional or Omnidirectional antenna for my location?

Postby scottkeen on Sat Jan 14, 2012 6:32 pm

Hi everyone, aloha from the Big Island of Hawaii.

I'm new to receiving HDTV over-the-air, after cancelling my cable subscription over 1 year ago.

I don't know which antenna to get - unidirectional, or omnidirectional - based on my location. Could someone here please advise me?

My location is Kailua Kona, HI 96740 at about 500 ft altitude on the Big Island of Hawaii.

From what I can tell, the most direct unobstructed cluster of broadcasts comes from Maui, north-northwest about 80 miles away. There are other broadcasts on the Big Island, some 30 miles north, some 60 miles east in Hilo, but between me and Hilo is a very large mountain (my house is actually on the slope of the mountain, about 500 ft up from sea level).

So, what antenna type, brand, model would you recommend? Thanks very much.

Here is the search results, but you might want to change the range to 100 miles to see Maui:
