Two antennas? Or is there one that will do the job

Postby legorik27 on Mon Mar 01, 2010 4:12 pm

I would appreciate a recommendation for receiving antenna signals from different locations from zip 56017. There are stations both to the north and south that I would like to receive. The antenna(s) will be mounted approximately 90' from the ground. Thoughts/Recommendations? Thanks

I am a bit confused by your contention that you have stations to the north and south: the Minneapolis-St. Paul stations lie 62 miles southeast of your location: with the exception of one lone CBS station on channel 12:KEYC, the other stations that you are looking for all seem to be translator stations rebroadcasting the MSP stations. I don't know how important KEYC is to you, and we can certainly arrange to get it for you, if you like, but all the important stations are in the Shoreview transmitter from the Minneapolis area, and you would be best advised to look for your TV. stations from that location.

I have suggested this combination to several people from Minnesota who are looking for the MSP stations, and have very good luck with it: rather than repost the entire conversation here, I will post a link to the thread:

Thanks so much for your feedback. KEYC although not close in distance is considered around this area to be a local station and it would be nice to try and pull that in. Would you recommend an additional antenna or could one of the other antennas be made to get that station?

Thanks again,

Erik

Picking up KEYC on channel 12 won't be much of an issue: we can add a small antenna that will get it, and still see the MSP stations. What I would do in this situation would be to add a Winegard YA-6713 high-band VHF yagi aimed at the KEYC transmitter to the mix, separate it by 4' from the other antennas, and combine the signal from this antenna using a Channel Master Jointenna for channel 12 (available cheaply from Amazon.com). Make the combination of VHF antennas BEFORE going into the preamplifier, and be sure wire the this system so that we insert the channel 12 antenna BEFORE the YA1713, since the jointenna will block channel 11 if we don't wire it properly.
