HD tuner same as digital tuner?

Postby collin on Tue Feb 09, 2010 1:36 am

I have line of sight to repeater antennas but 70 miles over the cascades mountains to the Portland, OR Digital broadcasts. Will I be able to get HDTV broadcast on my visio 37"? It has a coax input for my antenna which the manual calls the DTV/TV port. Does this TV have a HD tuner or just a digital tuner? Is there a difference?
Will I benefit from a new antenna? As of right now our tv picture looks like our old analog tv picture just 37 inches instead of 19 inches.

The Vizio LCD TVs have an ATSC tuner in them. This means they can tune in the digital TV broadcasts. For many manufacturers, HD Tuner = Digital Tuner, especially to the average consumer that doesn't know much about TVs.

Just plug your current antenna into the Vizio and see what happens. You may need to consider a signal booster given your distance and the mountains.

Remember to re-scan for your channels. Check out the video settings for what the TV will do with NTSC (4:3) images. You can tell it to do nothing, leaving black areas on either side of the image, expand, etc.
