Trying to get Canadian stations

Postby blackolds98 on Wed Nov 18, 2009 11:31 am

I am looking to pick up Canadian channels (mostly for hockey!) from just outside of Niagara Falls (Zip 14223, Tonawanda, NY). I have seen some things, but do not really know what to look for. I want something multi-directional that I can put where an old satellite dish was (near the gutter of the roof)....can you help me determine the best antenna for my situation? We are in the suburbs with some trees, but always got great satellite reception even from 10' off the ground. If more info is needed please let me know, and thanks for your help! Very new to this..... :?:

The Toronto stations are 54 miles from your location, meaning that they are a fringe-area signal in your area: while they are available, you are going to need a fringe-area UHF type antenna and a high-input preamplifier to see the Toronto digital stations clearly. Canada still has analog stations running, and will for two more years, but the big Toronto stations, like CBC and CTV are now in digital, so it makes sense to look for those stations. I would suggest a fringe-area UHF yagi like a Winegard HD-9032 or an AntennasDirect XG-91 mounted on your ROOF, not the top of your dish, and a high-input preamplifier like a Winegard HDP-269 to amplify the signals . Aim the antenna at 329 degrees from your location (at the CN Tower) and have your tuner scan for stations: you shouod see the Toronto stations without much trouble.

Multo-directional antennas placed on the ground in your area will cause you no end of headaches: you have powerful transmitters less than 6 miles from your location, and such an antenna will become a multipath-distortion nightmare.
