station reception question

hello,
this is my first post. i live in the california foothills at about 2500'. before the all digital conversion i received all the local analog broadcasts, abc, nbc pbs etc. during the analog-digital transition, i pulled in all stations in both analog and digital. when the digital only broadcasts began, i no longer got abc, pbs and fox. this didn't matter too much since i have directv with local channels. i now want to end the satellite service to save money.

my questions are: why did i lose the 3 channels, abc fox and pbs? will a high quality directional uhf antenna get them back?
