South Eastern CT Reception Estimate

Postby JsemJ on Tue May 11, 2010 9:38 am

Greetings, I hope the info provided here can get me off a cable subscription. I cancelled a Tivo account today because I switched to U-verse and they are not compatible. Then I started thinking why don't I try to replace the U-verse tv subscription with an antenna.

I live at 41.24910 , -73.17328 Own a two tv sets one flat panel plasma by Panasonic, and an older Sony Wega.

I suspect we are in a little of a depression with some higher ground north with a slope to the shore. Tall Trees surround the home and there is exiting antenna pole on the home. I am considering an investment in a Tivo Premier or going with a Roku box, in which I presume I would need a digital converter. Is there a "pay off" guideline for when you savings usually become greater than your investment?

This is a great service, and I will be sure to use your advertisers and/or recommendations for my purchases.

The coordinates that you gave me indicate that you are about 55 northeast miles from NYC, which isn't Southeastern, CT: can you confirm that the coordinates are correct: The TVFool.com from those coordinates would indicate that you are in Fairfield County, and most of your TV would come from NYC.

here is the TVFool.com report for the coordinates that you gave me:

OK now, that makes more sense...You will need a deep-fringe antenna system to see the New York City stations, and will also need a rotator if you want to see the CT and Long island stations, too. I would recommend my deep-fringe prescription in your situation: A Winegard YA-1713 VHF high-band yagi along with a an AntennasDirect XG-91 UHF antenna mounted on your roof along with a Channel master 9521a rotator and a high-input preamplifier like a Winegard HDP-269. Since WEDW is so close to your house, we need to be sure to have a preamp that won't overload in the face of that very strong signal

Combine the signals from the 2 antennas using a Pico-Macom UVSJ antenna joiner, and then feed the output of the UVSJ into your preamp. if you are running more than one TV set, you'll want to mount the preamp power supply in a central place inside your house, then mount an appropriate-sized splitter in the coaxial cable line after the power supply.
Be sure to separate the two antennas by at least 4' on the same mast avove the rotator, and mount the UHF antenna above the VHF antenna.

Here are links to the equipment, and a good antenna guide to help you.

Off the hook, I will keep you up to date. I am looking at this as an alternative to high cable and internet fees. I would like to dump the TV broadcasts immediately but money is tight at the moment. Hence the budgeting concerns. Thanks again.
