No signal received

Postby Jerry Robertson on Wed Dec 02, 2009 7:40 am

I have a hunting cabin very close to these GPS cordinates, 36.75388 & 81.12627 (zip code 24326). I have tryed using my new Magnavox HDTV on the old antenna and am not receiving a signal after setting it up for antenna (previously cable setup). There is also a gentleman that has a cabin adjacent to me that is having the same problem. We both were getting TV channels before the changeover to digital. We both have old roof type antennas that are hid in the attic under metal roofs. Also we are located within mountanious terrain. I know that we both need to get the antennas away from any metal interference but I am concerned that after installing them outside away from any interference that they still won't receive any signals. Do you have any recommendations for another antenna setup that might work to pull in the stations that we were getting before the changeover to digital siginals.

Signals are REALLY weak where you are, and the metal roof is going to cut out what little signal there is: you need to mount a fringe-area antenna on the roof, at least 5' above the metal roof, and even then, I would only expect you to be able to see WXII-DT, channel 31, NBC, and WUNL-DT, PBS, channel 32, with your antenna aimed at 130 degrees.

I would use a hugh-gain UHF antenna like a Winegard HD-9032 yagi, or an AntennasDirect XG-91 mounted as recommended, and use a preamp, like a Channel Master Titan 7777 if you find that the signals are still weak after installing the new antenna.
