Should This Antenna Work

Postby Pureblood on Sat Jan 17, 2009 10:00 pm

I live in Rural PA. Zip Code 16693. Just about a mile out of town. The bad thing about this area is that we are surrounded by mountains. I am worried that I might not pick up any local channels with a new antenna. About 15 years ago we got cable and took down our old antenna, it was just a basic old roof antenna. Only got channel 10, (CBS) and channel 6 (in the winter). Now we have satellite and love it but we want to try to get free HD on our local channels. Our house is now double the height that it used to be so I think that may help. The antenna I was planning on buying was this one, Antennas Direct CLEARSTREAM4 Antenna. My concern is that it wont pick up the digital signal since we are semi far away from the tower. What do you guys think? And do you think that antenna should do?
Also I do know that the broadcast towers are on top of the mountain.

Before I made any suggestions, I would want to see either your coordinates or your street address, since mountain terrain can vary greatly based on location....

Here is the exact location of my house. 40.446822,-78.217834
Basically the only channel i definitely want is 10 (wtaj, cbs) And i definitely think i should be able to get that.

Use an AntennasDirect XG-91 mounted on your roof, aimed at 305 degrees, and use a preamplifier like a Winegard HDP-269. I sugest using the XG-91 rather than a Clearstream because the XG-91 allows you to tilt the antenna up or down, which makes picking up signals that refract over hills much easier. The Clearstream is MUCH harder to tilt, and wouldn't be as likely to see the signal. I expect that you'll see WTAJ and WATM with that antenna array.

by the time i read your post i had already ordered the clearstream 4. Well it came yesterday and now i finally had the time to put it together. I don't have it out side yet but for now i have it sitting by the window, on a metal roof. (don't know if that helps or hurts) And it is also right next to the house wall. I get channel 10 at around 42% signal strength. This is the first HD station i had seen on my HDTV and all could say was wow. So much more clear than channel 10 in SD on directv. Can't wait to see if i can get more channels when i have it on a pole on top of my house.
