Requesting Antenna Help

Postby adamg on Mon Jan 11, 2010 11:20 am

Location: 43° 4'44.95"N 73°46'43.86"W zip 12866
1st story of a two story apartment building. East and North facing windows. Some two to three story buildings and trees nearby. Mostly flat terrain

Equipment: Terk HDTVa Antenna directly connected to Samsung Series 3 hdtv. Also have a RCA TV Converter Box STB7766C that I used previously with another TV but no longer use now that I have the hdtv.

I get the following channels:
10.1, 10.2
17.1, 17.2, 17.3
45.1, 45.2, 45.3
55.1, 55.2, 55.3, 55.4 (but these can be spotty)

I would really like to be able to get the NBC and Fox stations, but multiple re-scans haven't seem to have picked them up. I realize that given my apartment setup this is a difficult situation that may be difficult/impossible to fix, but any information or tips would be helpful.

Sorry, you are using about the best indoor antenna that I know: if you can't go outdoors, I don't have much advice for you.

Would adding a pre-amp help at all? Or is that misguided?

Amplifying an antenna that is already amplified won't do anything for you, I'm afraid. As for NBC, WRGB is on Channel 6, and low-band VHF channels are all but impossible to get on an indoor antenna.

I just realized that I actually have the Terk HDTVi rather than the HDTVa antenna. Since the HDTVi is not amplified, would it be worthwhile to try an amplifier? If so, is there one that you would recommend?

thanks

You can try it, but I would not be too hopeful, since the basic signal level is just not there. Look for a low-noise amplifier, like a CM3410 or a Winegard HDA-100 and get return privileges in case it doesn't help.
