Question about zone and distance

Postby miguelon on Tue Dec 23, 2008 12:22 am

Hello -

The individuals from HDTV labs instructed me to peruse and post an entry on this site, so here goes.

My situation is this: I live in Lake Forest, CA, the zip code is 92630. I'm looking at the possibility of adding an HDTV antenna. I've checked the AntennaWeb and there's a slew of channels that are in the yellow zone, however all the major channels are 40-50 miles away. Judging from Antenna Web, save for a tree or a rooftop, I may have pretty clear line of sight.

That being said, what would be the best antenna that you would recommend? I would prefer something that is about the same size and mounting assembly as that of a satellite dish.

Thanks for your input.

Best,
-M

No satellite-dish-type antenna will do the job for you, as those types of antennas will not pick up VHF digital stations, and LA will have four digital stations after Feb, 17, 2009. Buy yourself a Winegard HD-7694P, mount it on your roof, and aim it at Mt. Wilson: everything should come in perfectly.

Thanks for the reply.

I live in a condominium complex where my unit is the top unit. The item that's been suggested to me looks a little bulky and unsightly, unfortunately. I don't think the HOA would approve of seeing something like that.

Is there a smaller model that I could use? Could a smaller unit with an amplifier work?

No: you have VHF stations which a smaller antenna will nor receive...
