Question about scanning

Postby Binford on Fri Nov 20, 2009 2:06 pm

Speculative question here: Let's say I had two areas of fairly distant TV transmissions, say, 110 degrees apart requiring a directional antenna. If I point the antenna at one source and do a scan, I'd get those stations programmed into my tuner. No problem. But the other stations 110 degrees away wouldn't have been picked up. When I turn the antenna to the other source and rescan to get them, it won't pick up the original stations, so wouldn't they get dropped?

How would I be able to do a scan in two or more different directions?

Thanks!

Most tuners scans are cumulitive: they will hold stations in memory intill they are cleared out, so you can scan one direction, then turn your antenna and repeat the process: if you find that one or more TV stations is passed over, try entering the station manually using the keypad on your remote control. You will need to know the REAL channel, the actual channel frequency, not the VIRTUAL channel ( ie: 31.1) in order to enter those stations properly.

I suggest that you do a double clear scan before attempting to scan with your new antenna: remove the antenna cable from the connector on the tuner, and have the tuner scan TWICE for stations with NO antenna installed: that will clear out the memory of all the stations stored in the tuner, THEN reconnect the antenna and scan both directions for your stations.

Ahhhh..... So the scans would be cumulative! That makes sense. Thanks!

No antenna yet. Still trying to figure out what I might need. (When I do I'll run it by here to make sure it's a good one.)

In the meantime, I'll try the double clear scan and then do a couple scans with my home made TV-top antenna pointed toward the two main sources.

Thanks again!

Hmmmm.... Turns out my scans are not cumulative after all. Image

Each time I do a scan, it only saves the channels it picks up on that particular scan. Any others I had saved when the antenna pointed the other direction that aren't picked up again are dropped. I don't seem to be able to even manually enter them, even when I turn the antenna back to that channel's direction.

Owners' manuals being as pathetic as they are these days, isn't much help. It apparently assumes an antenna would only be scanned once.

My TV is another family Christmas gift to ourselves (along with the antenna/rotator/preamp setup I just posted pictures of in another thread). It is a 52" LCD Samsung Series 6 HDTV, model LN52B630N1F, if anyone is familiar with it.

The good news is that I have only been able to find one or two channels that I can't get scanned in by pointing the antenna in a mid-way position and scanning, so this isn't really a problem. I just figured someone might know a trick with this Samsung TV, in which case I'm all ears.

We're absolutely loving the TV and the antenna setup though! Finally caught up with the late-1990s! Maybe in another 5 years we'll pick up a Blu-ray player!

You didn't mention KMYQ, channel 25: can you get it: it should be easy from your location: it is the MyTV station.
Have you tried manualy inputting the station's channel numbers into the remote keypad, like 25.1?

Channel 25 comes in as 22.1 (KMYQ). I also get 22.2, which carries the same programming as FOX 13.1.

One of the channels I couldn't get captured in my scan was 42. I entered that manually and it came up.

On an earlier scan I also picked up several channels on 46 (46.1, 46.2, 46.3, 46.4) so I was able to put them in manually after pointing the antenna toward the NW. 46.1 and 46.2 have not had any programming on them that I've seen. 46.3 is a home shopping network and 46.4 is all infomercials. Channel 46 doesn't appear on any of the lists I've seen either at TV Fool or elsewhere.

So while subsequent scans do indeed drop the previous channels stored that don't show up again, I was able to capture the majority of them and then manually enter the others and save them by going to the Channel List function and then selecting the + to add them to the memory.

Thanks!
