Question about HDTV!

Hello!
My name is Torrie and I just have a quick question... I have a brand new LG 42" Flatscreen TV, I would love to get HD but I rent and our landlord pays for our cable. I have asked him if we could up grade and he said we could be never followed through. What I am wondering is if an antenna would work for us or if the new change over in feb will give us a better picture? Is the only way to have HDTV through your cable company?? I really don't know too much about this stuff, but really want to take advantage of my new TV! Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me! Torrie
