Outdoor Antenna

Postby djones on Wed Jul 22, 2009 9:01 am

I am located at zip code 74432 coordinates 35 Deg 14' 53.51"N 95 deg 30' 48.58"W. There are trees but none immediately to the north in the direction of the TV towers. I am in the country so there are no tall buildings or towers. I have one TV set with a digital converter but will be getting a second TV and it will be digital. I am about 80 miles from the transmitting towers which lie a little west of north.
Prior to the digital change over, I used an indoor antenna and received NBC, ABC, CBS, CW and a couple more.
I went through your "5 steps before buying an antenna" and checked AntennaWeb and a Large Directional w/pre-amp VHF/UHF outdoor antenna was recommended. The two they listed were:
1) Terk HDTVo
2) Winegard SS-2000

I am leaning toward the Terk HDTVo because it looks like it would attach to a pole easier than the Winegard SS-2000.
Are these the best choices or are there others that might work better?
I would appreciate any advice.

The two antennas that you listed are among the WORST choices that you could make! Neither one really qualifies as a large directional antenna, and both antennas rely on an amplifier, rather than good antenna design to provide the bulk of their signal.

It appears that most of your TV comes from Tulsa, which is 53 miles from your receiving location. The signals are weak in your area, and you really need a deep-fringe solution that includes VHF as well as UHF. ABC, NBC and PBS are all on VHF channels in your area, and neither antenna that you asked about will accomplish what you need them to do.

if I was installing this system, I would use a Winegard HD-7696P VHF-UHF antenna aimed at 350 degrees by your compass, mounted 30' from the ground, and use a high-input preamplifier like a Winegard HDP-269. This antenna will reliably pull all of the Tulsa stationsfor you without glitches.
