Omni directional antennas

I am getting ready to purchase an outdoor antenna. I live in Walstonburg NC zip 27888. I was about to buy a large 8 bay or yagi uhf with rotor and pre-amp until I visited my father today. I know it is unpopular to say anything good about omni-directional antennas, but he has a radio shack (don't know the model) disc type antenna. Now half the neighborhood has one! I wanted to see what kind of reception he was getting. He was pulling in clear signals as far west as Durham (83 miles) and as far east as New Bern (62 miles) with an omni directional antenna! Well, I am not investing $300 + in an antenna system when I can get this kind of reception for less than half the investment. My brother-in-law bought one too, and he says it is by far the best antenna he has ever seen. Now, what I want to know is if anyone can tell me which omni directional antenna is best. Can anyone help?

Sorry: no advice on omnidirectional antenna. In my opinion, they are not reliable at distances beyond 10 miles or so from the transmitters, and I would never install one.
