northern ny

Hi, I'm interested in getting some information on antennas. I recently took a hard look at the cable bill and thought it was ridiculous! Anyway, between the limited over the air on antenna and the internet tv, think that I can get it for free. So, where to start? We live in Watertown NY, 13601. I'm basically looking to pick up our local cbs and PBS stations (right here in Watertown). Would welcome anything else if it we could get it. I'm thoroughly confused on all the options for Antennas, boosters, amplifiers, mounts, etc. Figure since we live so far out it would have to be roof mount. But where do the amplifiers come in? Can I still have the cable go to the 4 TVs in my house without killing the signal? I looked on the other section of this website and it said that I needed a "blue" antenna, which I figure = LARGE. Would something like that be a "do it yourself" job? Is there a directory somewhere of installers in NY? Just looking at the options before dumping cable. Thanks for any advice you can give.
