newbie - want to ditch cable

Postby ldmforruby on Sun Dec 27, 2009 5:18 pm

HI, I just bought my hubby a plasma tv & we're trying tivo hd. We want to try & ditch cox cable completely, but need the right antenna. I've looked at several sites & get a variety of answers. What is your thought? Our zip is 85254. I'd appreciate your advice! Thank you.

Your situation is easy: all of the South Mountain transmitters are 20 miles from your house, and are strong in your area: I would use a Winegard HD-7694P or an AntennaCraft HBU-33 VHF-high-band plus UHF antenna mountd on your roof aimed at South Mountain: you should expect to get at least 15 TV stations plus their sub-channels with that antenna, and may even see some of the Tucson stations if you install an antenna rotator like a Channel Master 9521a rotator, which will allow you to turn the antenna to point at different transmitters.

Thanks for the reply! I looked at the ones you suggested, but they're enormous. I live in a semi-gated community and the neighbors would get pretty cross if I put one of those up. Any other (smaller) ideas? Are any of the indoor ones even a consideration? Also, we'll be running two tv's in different rooms, will that make a difference?
Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it!

That antenna is only 5' long, and is very small when you mount it on top of your roof: anythig smaller won't give you reliable reception of the VHF channels that you have.

They are both good antennas, although I would give the nod to the WINEGARD HD-7694P. Several online retailers sell these products. I have included links and an antenna installation guide to help you figure it all out.
