newbie to hdtv would like some advice

Postby random man on Sun Feb 06, 2011 2:48 pm

Hello all.
As stated, as a long time satellite consumer I have never had to worry about antenna reception.
Now it seems the monthly payment for this never-worry lifestyle has exceeded what is currently
available in our monthly income. So the time has come to dump satellite and rely on our local channels
for all of our viewing needs.
I need some advice if you would care to share it with me.
First off, I live in Angier, NC whose zip code is 27501. I have looked on the antenna locator and see stations
in every direction from me.
I have two TV's I would like to connect to the antenna, one is a Sylvania analog TV and the other is a Samsung HDTV
with an internal HD converter/receiver.
I see on the antenna locator that PBS is out of range, which we would really like to receive so any hints would be appreciated.
I would like to buy a reasonably priced multi-antenna setup or an antenna with a rotator that will receive all channels within my area. There are no tall buildings to worry about...just trees.
I am not quite sure what else I would need besides some kind of splitter to wire both TV's and a HD to Analog convertor for my analog TV.
Again, any and all information and advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi random man,

If you could enter your address into the TVfool locatar http://www.tvfool.com/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=29 and then post the url back here please. Please note: The TVFool results will not show your address in the url results.

Zip codes by themselves are generally to far off the mark for us to provide good advice in most cases.

Hi random man,

No worries! Welcome to the cable cord cutters club.

Your TVfool location doesn't look too bad at all. This is what I would suggest, first off you mention that you have satellite dish service. If the sat dish pole is mounted on your house such that it provides clear line of sight towards the North East would be great. If that is the case you can then use the sat dish J pole and coaxial cable (just remove the sat dish and install the recommended TV antenna below), track the coax back to the house and see if it goes to a splitter to feed the TVs. The other thing I often see is dual LNB sat dish feeding two coax cables to two separate TVs. In this case you will need to use just one of the coax cables and install a splitter to feed your TVs.

I would recommend the RCA ANT751 http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0024R4B5C/ref=ord_cart_shr?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER for you location as it will pick up both VHF/UHF channels, ABC is on VHF real channel 11. Next point it towards the North East direction or 46 degrees magnetic. The PBS channel you mention could be a problem to pick up, but you may still pick it up off axis without issue. The worst case is another UHF antenna such as DB2 pointing towards the North West joined to the RCA ANT751.

Thank you for all the info.
I will look over all of the wiring from the satellite dish this weekend.
I will also order the antenna and see what happens.
Now I am off to tvictory to browse around.
Thanks again.
