New to the antenna world

I have paid for cable TV for more years than I can remember. I have decided to cancel cable and try using an antenna. I tried a cheap $40 Phillips antenna which picked up 6 or 7 channels when I had it hooked up to one TV but when I hooked it up to the splitter to send the signal to all 6 TV's in the house I could not get anything. What do I need to do to hook up an antenna to run 6 TV's? Any help is appreciated.
