New Antenna

Just bought my parents a cm4228 for Christmas. Waiting the box to come in for digital, as they just have an analog tv. However was only able to pick up one station over analog. There are about 5 stations within 50 miles. Question I have is this. We could not get antenna to fit into his attic opening, so I put it on a pole next to his dirtectv dish in yard. Should I move this to the roof? Should I use an amp? I currently have it diplexed with satellite. should I get rid of diplexers and go straight to tv? Will I be able to pick up more channels with the digital converter than I normally can with analog?
