Need help chosing antenna - 30318 (tvfool diagram attached)

Postby poontz13 on Mon Mar 16, 2009 8:52 am

The channels I'm interested in range from magnetic 99deg to 136deg (both UHF/VHF) and I'm basically within 20 miles of all transmitters.

I'd prefer an un-obtrusive indoor antenna that I can just put on top of the entertainment center because I live in an old house with plaster walls that was never wired for coax. If I did need an outdoor antenna I can plug it in where the current cable provider enters my house...however that is a good 40 feet by the time I get the coax down from the roof, into the basement and across the other side of the house where the tv is.

1) I'm thinking the Winegard SS2000 for outdoor or the Winegard Sensar III (non-amplified) for indoor.

2) If I do need an outdoor antenna, is there any drawback to putting it in the attic in my situation?

3) I'll probably use this on two TVs both old CRT analog with a DTV converter box (I'm planning on getting the Zenith DTT901 box), do I need a pre-amp and splitter that has been mentioned elsewhere on the forum, or, would an amplified antenna with a splitter do the job?

Thanks.

Even though signals are strong where you are, I would never use an indoor antenna, since they are subject to all kindds of multipath issues. Rather than use the Wingard SS200, which is poor on VHF, I suggest a Winegard HD-7694P antenna mounted on your roof and aimed at the bulk of the stations at roughly 115 degrees. The bandwidth of the antenna is wide enough that you should see all of your Atlanta stations without a hitch using that antenna.

I assume by saying to mount it on the roof, you don't think the attic is a good idea. Is it okay to mount on the side of the house near the peak, as long as it sticks up above the roofline?

Thanks for your help.

Mounting it on the side of the house so that it sees over the peak of the roof is a fine idea: mounting in the attic is a much less fine idea:)
