Need an antenna recommendation please

Postby cjalphonso on Tue Feb 09, 2010 3:53 pm

My coorinates are: 34deg05min09.27secN, 81deg14min18.29secW taken from google earth.
Here is my tv fool link:

I currently have an AntennaCraft HDX1000. It's not on my roof but is sidewall mounted outside my house. I am not getting adequate signal on all networks. On normal nights I'm loosing the FOX(57.1/48rf) and in rainy weather I loose almost all stations. It looks like the lowest station is ABC(25.1/8rf). Luckily everything I want is in the same direction, approximately 90deg. So I am looking for an antenna that I can mount on my roof that will help my situation. Currently antennaweb says I need a violet antenna and tv fool says I need a green. The HDX1000 is a red so I must need the violet since the red is not sufficient. If you look at my coords in google earth you'll see that I am on a sloping hill about 25 feet down. We also have pine trees which are probably 60-70 feet high. It's not a forest but they are an obstruction. I am using a Hauppauge HVR-1600 tuner card in a computer which is dedicated to recording all of my HDTV. It is then streamed throughout my house via network. The plan is to get several of these tunners so I can record multiple HDTV channels via my SAGETV server. Because of the location of the roof to my server, there is about 100 feet of cable between them.
So in a nutshell:
Down a hill
Tree obstructions
Roof Mounted
100 feet of cable
Multilple tuners...2 maybe 3 eventually.
Also, any suggestions for poles would be good. I will be mounting a pole in the ground and secured to the eave of my house, probably 15-20 feet high.
Thanks in advance.

The Columbia stations all lie east of your location less than 30 miles away, but the antenna that you have chosen isn't really designed to perform in the manner that you have chosen to install it. I would replace the antenna that you have with a Winegard HD-7694p VHF-hugh band plus UHF antenna. Since you have long cable lengths, you would benefit from using a preamplifier like a Winegard HDP-269 high-input preamp. As for masting and mounting options, check out the installation guide that I have linked to you.

Thanks for the recommendation. I put my order in this morning. Now that I've ordered the pre-amp you suggested, can I just use a normal splitter to go to multiple tuners?
Thanks

Yes you can use a conventional splitter after the preamplifier power injector. Be sure to use a high-quality, low-loss splitter rated for at least 1 gHz or more.
