Need Antenna advice Williamsburg, VA house full of TVs

Postby iminwmbrg on Wed Sep 28, 2011 12:26 pm

I would like some guidance on antenna selection and if I should persue this solution to an expensive cable subscription. Here is my TV fool info:

http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapp ... 3b72b72ea9

for my address in Williamsburg, Va 23188.

Also I want to make sure I am able to get all (six) of the TVs in the house receiving the antenna signal. So just an overview of that setup would be nice to know I am not biting off more than I can chew.

GeoSelector 23188 zip code suggested:
Winegard HD7698P (Read HD7698P reviews)
Preamp: Required
Rotator: Required

This suggestion is for a outside antenna -- would an attic (we have a giant attic with tall celings, ashault shingles, one gable end is hardy board siding and the other is brick (but 2 ft lower than the main roof)) antenna be an viable option for my location?

TVs in the house:
LG Plasma 50PC1DR
Olivia Plasma LT23HVx
Olivia Plasma 42" can't see the model #
Samsung HPS4253X/XAA
some Epson projection setup (not sure of model... need to get on a ladder)

To the southeast there are trees/woods -- not heavy, though. The house sits up pretty high relative to the trees/houses around and there are only a few trees significantly above the roof line.

Whatever guidance you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Not as bad as you may think, actually...You need to determine if you would prefer the Hampton Rhodes stations, or the Richmond stations, or do you need both? A rotator is not something that I would recommend if you have 6 TV sets, because you may have different tastes in TV programming, and one may want to see Richmond and the other in the Hampton-Portsmouth area, and one antenna won't do both cities without using a rotator. Since Hampton-Portsmouth is a larger TV market than Richmond, I suggest that you look to their stations for your programming: you will get excellent TV reception from all of those stations, and everyone in the house can be happy because they can watch all the various networks without having to rotate an antenna. If you choose to go that way, I would downsize your antenna to a Winegard HD-7697P, mount the antenna on the roof as high as is practical, aim the antenna at 167 degrees compass point, and use a good distribution amplifier-splitter like a Channel Master CM3418, which will allow you to power all 6 (or more) TV sets without signal loss. Use all good high-quality RG-6u coaxial cable, and be sure to scan the digital TV tuners of each TV set once connected to find oll of your local stations. I think you'll be very surprised as how much TV you'll actually see.

Here are links to the equipment and a good TV antenna installation guide. Good Luck.
