Need Advice in Florida

Postby jojo on Fri Nov 20, 2009 10:07 pm

Hi,
What type of antenna/converter system would we need in the 33843 zip code in Frostproof, Florida. The system would need to run 2 televisions. Thank you for your help. One television is analog, the other television is HD but I don't think it has a converter.

You are about 45 miles from the Tampa-St. Pete transmitters, and a fringe-area VHF-high-band plus UHF antenna should pick up everything for you EXCEPT CBS if you aim the antenna at 280 degrees from your location. WTSP-DT is going to be much harder to get because it is an additional 35 miles further from your location, and it's signal will be very weak. I suggest that you consider using a Winegard HD-7696p VHF-high band plus UHF antenna aimed at the Tanpa- St Pete transmitters, and use a Winegard HDP-269 preamplifier mounted on the TV mast. You may get lucky and get WTSP-DT on channel 10 without any other additional equipment. If you don't, then we may have to look at the Ft. Myers stations, like channel 9, WINK-DT to get your CBS reception, and that will require a separate VHF high-band yagi antenna aimed at Ft. Myers and a Channel master JoinTenna 0585-09 to get WINK-DT.

Where do you purchase these supplies? What type of antenna rotor do I need? Do I need a tuner? Thank you.

SolidSignal.com, warrenelectronics.com and starkelectronic.com are 3 good online sources for TV antennas. I usually use a Channel Master 9521a Rotator when I need to rotate an antenna.

As for tuners, your analog TV will require a digital converter box, which will connect to the antenna connector of your TV set, much like a cable TV or satellite box. Your HDTV-ready TV will need an HDTV digital tuner, and there are a few of them out there. I have used the Samsung DTB-H260F, which is an excellent tuner, as are the LG LST 3100 and LST 4200 and LST 4600 tuners. Check the other forum for converters and tuners on theis website for other recommendations.
