Mounting question - guy wire needed for tripod mount?

Postby Probedude on Sat Jan 23, 2010 5:03 pm

Tigerbangs,
I just spent the day going to at least 5 different stores looking for guy wire and a mast guy wire ring so I can put up my 10' mast + Antennacraft Y10-7-13 + XG91 antennas.
NOBODY carries this stuff anymore! No guy wire, no attachment hw for the mast except the bottom tilting clamp mount.

When I bought the antennas, I also bought the Winegard CM9003 3' tripod but wasn't planning on using it.
If I did use it is this strong enough to keep a 10' mast in place with the 2 antennas without the guy wire? (I'm thinking no - the distance between the two mounting points on the pole is not separated by much on this tripod).

If not, I'll have to mail order stuff from Summit. I ordered my antennas from SolidSignal but even they don't sell hardware to attach guy wires to a mast! (I even asked them).
Crazy!

Radio Shack used to sell guy wire and masting, so I am surprised that they didn't have what you needed: most of the new retail help in Radio Shack stores only know about cell phones, anyway, so that doesn't surprise me. A 3' tripod won't support your antennas all by themselvs with a 10' mast: you'll need to guy-wire them to make them weatherproof.

Thanks for the reply. Radio Shack doesn't sell guy wire anymore, just a few brackets. I think they still sell masts though - it's in the back.

I just remembered there's an electronic store in the city that I work in (electronic components and hw house, not a big box store) . Will visit on Monday and hope they have it.
Shipping for this stuff is expensive if I were to buy it mailorder.
