Looking to dump Comcast and go with Antenna

Postby thenubofit on Sat Nov 13, 2010 12:12 am

I would like an antenna recommendation. My situation is as follows:

I live in in a rural area called Coatesville, PA 19320. I'm in a new residential area, in a single story home, but most homes are two story in my neighborhood. I plan on mounting the antenna in the attic, since there are restrictions on roof antennas. There is a small airport and high tension wires nearby (within a mile or two), and there are tall trees behind my home that are taller than the house.

According to AntennaWeb, all the stations that are available are between 98 and 100 degrees, and all are approximately 35 miles from my home. All station are UHF(9 yellow and 1 green) except two which are VHF (both green), channel 6.1 and 12.1.

My coordinates are:
N 40 degrees 01.350'
W075 degrees53.935'
Elevation: approximately 800 feet

AntennaWeb is recommending a "Medium Multidirectional Antenna". Any suggestions?

Sorry, but the coordinates that you provided are not in a format that makes any sense: can you please go to TVFool.com, input your street address where requested, and post that information here? I believe that I know what you need, but I want to be certain that I have your correct information.

Does this help: Latitude: 40.022479 / Longitude: -75.899248

Also, I don't know if you saw my second message so I will repeat it hear:
The antenna will be used for one Samsung 52" 1080p 120Hz Flat panel LCD HDTV (Model: LN52A750), although I plan on adding a Channel Master CM-7000PAL Antenna HD DVR.

Thanks tigerbangs,

The Philadelphia stations are 35 miles due east of your location, and should be easy to get with a good all-channel antenna mounted on your roof. You need a good all-channel directional antenna because WPVI-DT operates on VHF low-band channel 6, so I would recommend using a Winegard HD-7082P or a Channel Master Crossfire 3679 mounted on your roof.

You also have the Harrisburg stations in the opposite directions about 42 miles away, and, if you use an antenna rotator, those stations will also be available to you. Good rotators include the Channel Master 9521a and the AntennaCraft TDP-2.

Here is a good antenna installation guide to help you:
http://manuals.solidsignal.com/AntInstallGuide.pdf

Despite what your homeowner's association tries to tell you, the FCC ruled over 15 years ago that homeowners associations may not restrict the installation of TV antennas on the roof of your private residence for the purposes of TV, radio or internet reception. If that clause exists in your homeowner's association regulations, it is in error and is unenforceable. The burden of proof is placed on the homeowners association, and they can be liable for damages if they try to enforce their no-antenna on the roof rules. I have attached a link to the FCC website where the details of the law are explained. I hope that you find it useful.

I have not used a forum before, so please redirect me if I am not posting in the right place. We have a cable serivce at this time and it has become so expensive that we would like to replace it with a good antenna. We live in Kentucky and our zip is 40065. We have no tall trees or buildings around us. Our broadcasting went to Digital and we have one HDTV that we want to connect to the antenna. We would appreciate any suggestions you might have.

Do you have any alternative for something that would fit in the attic. I'm not sure I even want something that large on the top of my roof. My attic has only blown insulation with no aluminum backing. Or would you still use one of those antennas and mount it in the attic. My viewing habits are such that the most important stations for me are CBS and FOX. Rarely watch the other stations.

I can guarantee good reception if you mount the antenna on the roof, however, if you mount the recommended antenna (s) or anything smaller in the attic, I wouldn't guarantee it.

Do you have a recommendation on the cable I should be using form antenna to TV? The cable from Comcast is nearby my installation point, is it possible to use this cable?

Yes, as long as you disconnect from Comcast, you can re-use their coax cable, as long as it suits your needs.
