Just moved and get little reception!

Postby tyro1 on Mon Jan 25, 2010 12:05 am

Great website BTW, been fishing around for a few hours now, found a lot of great info.

I have used a set top 'bunny ears' for years and I moved about a mile down the road and now I don't get a lot of my stations. My new house has a rooftop antenna, but I hooked up to it and get even less reception then the bunny ears.

Hear is what I've got now:

Older looking rooftop antenna on about a 5' mast
connected to about 30' of coaxial cable
connected to a splitter
one split going about 20' to an LG DVD player w/ digital tuner
the other split going about 30' to a Toshiba TV w/ digital tuner (no box needed for either)

There are two fairly near-by towers and I would like to get the stations at both if possible.

My Zip code is 85203

I would like to spend less then $200.

Any help on this would be great, thanks!

I tend to believe that the antenna that you have on the roof is aged, and the coaxial cable is probably bad. In any event, it shouldn't be too expensive to replace what you have and start fresh. The transmitters that you are looking for are all on top of South Mountain, about 17 miles from you, and should be a very easy catch. I would use a Winegard HD-7694P mounted on your roof and aimed at 230 degrees by your compass. Use all new RG-6u coaxial cable, and be sure that you use a high-quality 1 gHz or better splitter when dividing the signal between the two devices. Follow the information about grounding the antenna in the PDF that I have listed below, and you'll be blessed with perfect reception.

As an additional bonus, if you want to add a rotator to your antenna so you can turn the antenna towards Tucson, you should see the Tuscons stations, too, if you aim the antenna at 130 degrees.

Awesome - thanks for the advise, if I got an omni directional antenna, would could I get both towers, or is the other one too far?

Never use an omnidirectional antenna! Use the one that one suggested and aim it at South Mountain, and you'll be fine!
