indoor antenna vs outdoor?

Hello everyone,

I am totally confused as to where to start looking. I am only interested in watching the news on occasion so I refuse to pay $30/m for cable. I have an older TV set and there again, I am not going to buy a flat screen TV for just watching the news...

I used to get a couple of channels even though I disconnected the cable a couple of years ago... but the company caught on to that and changed the filter, so I get... nothing at all now. I tried a couple of different indoor antennas but still get nothing (even after setting up for AIR reception instead of cable and placing the antenna by the window).

... so my question: what am I supposed to buy, or do in order to get a couple of channels? (I have just spent a couple of hours searching in the FAQ but am still in the dark) ...would an outdoor antenna be what I need... or better still, are the home made ones with coat hangers working at all and is it worth bothering with?
