Re: Am I hopeless? Need some OTA magic

So I received my order from solidsignal, and began the process of slowly piecing together the 91XG, careful not to bend anything. I really wanted to see what this thing could do, so I lowered the pole, and removed the VHF antenna for the time being. I was in a bit of a time crunch if I wanted to get everything going before the sun set, and wanted to avoid any possible problems, since I didn't know (and still don't) the correct spacing between the 91XG and my VHF antenna.

Anyway, I managed to get the 91XG mounted, as well as the 7777, in single mode. Raised the pole back up, and ran the new cable through the front door to the panny waiting inside. After a good 2 hours of playing with different directional locations, I can share with you the exciting - and somewhat confusing - results.

First off, my goal was to reach a FOX affiliate for the Super Bowl. SUCCESS! 91% Signal strength.
The most amazing thing i've found so far is I can pick up several stations in MEMPHIS with clarity. This blows my mind! 126 miles away! What?

There are a couple things that totally mystify me. For one, when I point towards NASHVILLE, I pickup those stations, but I also receive MEMPHIS as well, which is in the complete OPPOSITE direction! How is that possible? My thinking was, with this being directional, your going to pickup the stations your pointing at, not also 180 degrees in the opposite direction! And certainly not 100+ miles away.

Here's one for ya - I could only get 45-50% signal from WZDX-DT 41 pointing directly towards the tower. However to my surprise, when I rotated the 91XG 180 degrees, pointing AWAY, I got 91% signal. On the other hand, to get the most signal from Nashville, I point the antenna at it. If I try to aim backwards like Huntsville, I get less of a signal, like you would expect.

Can you explain this? Point AWAY from Huntsville yields best results.

From my understanding of the 91XG, the bare end of the boom faces the tower - the front. And the corner reflector is the back.
Also, I have all directors facing bare-metal towards the end of the boom, with the arrows pointing that way as well. Perhaps I have the directors on backwards, or am confused about which end is which. Or I just made a fool of myself, and I misread the compass.

I didn't get enough daylight to snap photos, so here are a few during assembly. I forgot to snap one after finishing assembly of the 91XG. See the beautiful fox network logo, which I immediately sent to the wife's phone. She already made big super bowl party plans, which all hinged on whether I could get all this working. I think I hit this one out of the park, thanks to your recommendations!!

Oh, and how many feet/inches between my antennas?

It's all great to hear! I'm glad that it worked for you, but be aware that atmospheric conditions can play tricks on you, so I wouldn't count on having all those TV stations available all the time. As for the aiming issues, it is possible that you are seeing reflected signals that are making your signal readings erratic. As for re-mounting your VHF antenna: make sure that it is separated on the same mast by at least 4'. It is customary to mount the UHF antenna on the top of the mast, and, in the case of the XG-91, it is a good idea to use the tilt-mounting feature to raise the front of the antenna about 15 degrees when it is mounted above a VHF antenna to avoid interaction between the two antennas.

Enjoy the Super Bowl!
