hooking up antenna to hdtv

Postby oldflyingfarmer on Sun Apr 04, 2010 7:42 pm

Hope I am in the correct forum. I am dropping my satellite service and want to hook my antenna to my old hdtv. It does not have HDMI connections, only RGB (three separate), S-video and coax. I would like the flexibility to go to HDMI also, in case I later upgrade my tv. What do I need to hook my coax from my antenna to my tv to receive over the air in hd?
Second question, what would I need to get hd from my desktop to my tv? I am considering a sub to one of the download sites also, like net-****.
I appreciate any help. I have used sat tv for a long time and have gotten out of the loop.

State WHERE you are ( zip code would be most helpful )27864

State HOW MANY television sets you plan to run from the antenna system=2

let us know if you live in a heavily forrested area, or if you live where you have taller buildings or towers within 3-4 blocks from your location. rural open area

It's also very helpful to tell us what kind of TV set you are using if you have a digital TV or a digital converter, since they all program digital reception differently-using an old big screen hdtv. Was using dish-******k hd receiver but want to just use over the air antenna

My tv does not have hdmi connections, only rgb, s-video, and coax.

thanks for any help

Well, the good news is that you have no shortage of TV stations available to you via an antenna: Raleigh-Durham, Greenville, and Morehead City are all available to you if you are willing to use an outdoor antenna with a rotator. because your TV sets do not have internal digital tuners, you will need to buy 2 ATSC digital tuners to connect to the component (red, blue and green) connections on your TV set. Do NOT buy digital converters: they can receive digital TV signals, but do NOT do HDTV. There are a number of HDTV tuners available on the market, and you will have to investigate them: most can be had for less than $100.00 apiece.

eBay is also a good source for HDTV tuners:

As for an antennaL you can do without a rotator and aim an outdoor antenna at Raleigh-Durham (270 degrees) by your compas. I would suggest using a Winegard HD-7696P or an AntennaCraft HBU-44, both of which are widely available

Here is a good installation guide to show oyu how to install the antenna:
