Help with Antenna choice

Postby B Y on Fri Mar 26, 2010 10:29 am

I Live in Ohio at these coordinates 40.4587, -83.7883 in the 43324 zip code. I currently have Dish with no antenna. I would like to get an antenna and drop the networks from Dish. I am now watching the Dayton Ohio networks. I am pretty confident of getting the Lima, Ohio networks since they are closer and can receive one or two of these stations with rabbit ears. The terrain is fairly flat. I live in a small wooded area. I would really like to put an antenna in the attic because I don't want to deal with wind, ice, and snow on the antenna and booster. Most of the stations are UHF stations. I have seen many older posts on other websites that talk about the channel master 4228 being a good antenna. I suspect they were talking about the old version. I have heard a lot of bad things about the new 4228HD version. Can someone give me an idea what the best antenna to buy to get all of the Lima networks and is it even possible to get the Dayton ones from the attic?

Here is your TVFool.com report:

While Lima has one major TV network, Dayton has all of the major networks available, and should be your primary target. I can't ever recommend mounting an antenna system in the attic because of unpredictable results, but I can tell you that, if you follow my instructions and mount this system on the roof, that you will see all of the Dayton stations plus WLIO from Lima, and you will get them without a hitch.

WLIO operates on digital channel 8, and is fairly close to you, but it is on the opposite direction from all of the Dayton stations, All of the Dayton stations lie in the same direction from you, and are on UHF, so I would recommend a 2-antenna installation for you consisting of the AntennasDirect XG-91 UHF antenna mounted on your roof, aimed at 212 degrees as measured by your compass. I would also use a small VHF high-band VHF yagi like a Winegard YA-6713 or an AntennaCraft Y-5-7-13 mounted 4' BELOW the UHF antenna, aimed at 325 degrees by your compass. Combine the two antennas using a Channel Master Titan 7777 preamplifier, which has separate VHF and UHF antenna inputs, and be sure to watch the video about the Channel Master Titan 7777 posted on the forum for good installation instructions. I have linked a good general instruction manual below, which will guide you through the installation process: when you are finished, you will see Lima and the Dayton stations without a problem.
