Help for me as well

Postby Tricia on Wed Jan 06, 2010 9:23 am

I have the common ' need help choosing an antenna ' question. After reading a few of the posts, I went to TVfool and generated a report for my area. It can be found at

http://www.tvfool.com/?option=com_wrapp ... b85a084486

With a simple cheap indoor antenna sitting next to our TV on the first floor (of two story home) we get ABC and FOX quite well (channel 9, channel 48) but the others range from usually good but can break up rather often (PBS, channel 24) to not at all, Channel 5 (CBS). We'd like to get our local PBS, NBC, and CBS clearly if possible. I think these stations are 27 - 35 miles away max. On looking at antennaweb, the recommendations range from "yellow" to "blue" to "violet". I get the impression that an amplifier for the 'violet' stations will mess up the signal reception for the "yellow" station? We'd like to get an antenna that we can stick under the eaves instead of placing it on the roof. Our coordinates are Lat = 42.4685, Long = -76.3435.

I'd appreciate any suggestions on type of antenna to purchase.

Thank you.

A couple of clarifications here: under-eave antennas are worthless beyond 10-15 miles from the transmitters: you are about 35 miles from the Syracuse transmitters, and really need a roof-mounted antenna to get reliable reception from that city, especially for NBC and CBS. Using the right antenna will make a world of difference in the quality of your TV reception. Fortunately, all of the Syracuse Tv stations are on UHF, and you won't need a huge antenna mounted on the roof to do the job.

I would use a Winegard HD-8800 antenna mounted on your roof aimed at 30 degrees by your compass. Use high-quality RG-6u coaxial cable, follow the installation instructions posted below, and you should see everything from Syracuse clearly and without a problem.
