help for 28532

Postby 2zcreek on Wed May 06, 2009 8:52 am

I live 24 miles due east of 28532 on the water on basically flat landscape (coastal NC). I can't pick up digital channels 12.1 and 9.1 with my indoor antenna which are 38 and 48 miles away respectively. I get all of the closer channels digitally. Our home is 2 stories with a chimney that I don't want to put an antenna on (we do get very high winds and hurricanes). If I put my indoor antenna outside through an open window, I get 12.1 but not 9.1.

I have Dish Network for satellite TV but don't want to PAY for the free local channels. Can I attach an antenna to my satellite dish and use the same cables?

What are my options? I don't want attic mount and prefer to not drill holes for another antenna line.

It's clear that an indoor antenna isn't going to help you. Dish-mounted antennas are rarely good for for than 15 miles or so, and are probably not an option for you, either. While most of your stations lie northwest of your location, FOX appears to be due east of you, and will be on a VHF channel after June 12. What this all means is that, if you want reliable reception on all of your local stations, tou are going to need an outdoor VHF-high-band plus UHF antenna mounted on your roof along with an antenna rotator to turn the antenna.

I suggest the following: bite the bullet and get yourself a Winegard HD-7696P outdoor antenna and a Channel Master 9521a rotator: if you are wary of roof or chimney mounting, use an eave-mount or a wall-mount bracket and use enough masting so that the antenna can see over the highest point of the roof. Use the installation guide that I link to you below for specific options. This antenna system will allow you to see all of your local stations clearly and free of tiling or other glitches.
