Help in Eastern Kentucky

Postby inspector1 on Sun Feb 22, 2009 9:22 am

Hello,

I could use some help in getting an antenna for use at my home. We live in Owingsville, KY (Zip: 40360) in a single story home. Presently we watch over the air TV from Lexington, Kentucky via a cheap UHF only antenna I got from Radio Shack with a temporary installation on a 30 foot pole bungee corded to the side of the house. This is a single hook-up for our main TV. Presently we get the three main stations from Lexington and the ION station from Morehead KY. We do not receive the FOX Affiliate. I understand that two of our stations are going to move to VHF with the transition which means I will not be able to receive them with my present set-up. Additionally I need to be able to have signal to four televisions and would like to be able to receive stations from other markets such as Cincinnati OH and Huntington WV. Can you give me a suggestion as to type of antenna, best installation method, how to install multiple tv's etc. Thanks so much for your help.

Your FOX station is on Channel 4 (WDKY-DT), a low-band VHF station, and won't be available from a UHF antenna under almost any circumstances. WDKY-DT has applied to move to channel 31, but it is only a request at the moment, and hasn't been taken up by the FCC as of yet. In order to get it, you will need a low-band antenna of some sort. I suggest looking at an AntennaCraft Y-5-2-6, which is a 5 element low-band yagi, which can be added to your UHF antenna on the same mast as long as it is separated by at least 4' from the UHF antenna. Connect the two antennas using a Pico-Macom UFSJ splitter-joiner, and FOX will come in just fine for you.

As for picking up Cincinnati or other cities, based solely on your zip code, I wouldn't offer a lot of hope, but if we had your specific coordinates or street address, we could make a much better guess as to your real out-ot-town reception potential.
