Help me ditch my Direct TV - Manor, Texas 78653

Postby noskillantennanoob on Tue Jul 06, 2010 6:51 pm

Hello,

I've been really wanting to get rid of my Direct TV subscription and work off of internet TV and netflixes from my Xbox 360. I have a Samsung 1080P HDTV (I believe the model is LN46C670). Here is my map from the HDTV Labs Geoselect:

Here's another detail:

My main reason for getting an antenna would be to get local broadcast NFL and college football. I noticed CBS is out of my area which is a huge downer for SEC college football :(. Everything esle I can get off of internet TV or netflixes.

Two issues I'm seeing here:

1) My HOA bans antennas, how would I go fighting this if I go this route?
2) I noticed I'm very far from the UHF stations like over 70 miles...even with a outdoor antenna what are my prospects here?
3) I have zero experience install since a thing on my roof, are there people who install antennas and how much would it typically cost to get it on a roof? There is also a select area in my home where the antenna would be installed per HOA rules (Back of house).

I know my chances are very slim with getting a good singal with a indoor antenna (I saw the Winegard SS-3000 Amplified Indoor UHF/VHF Antenna recommended on that search).

Thanks

OK, first of all, no HOA can prevent you from installing a TV antenna in order to receive local TV stations, period! The FCC ruling of 15 years ago: http://www.fcc.gov/mb/facts/otard.html overrules the HOA''s ability to enforce any anti-antenna policy. if you have any question about it, print out the link that I linked to you, and show it to your HOA if you are concerned about crossing them: basically, if you are in your own home, and have sole use of your roof, then you have the right to install an antenna. if you are in a condo or townhouse, the rules are different, so look over the link that gave you.

Now, you are only 15 miles from the Austin transmitters, and, as long at the Austin stations carry what you are looking for, then you won't need a very big antenna to accomplish what you need to do. if Austin does not carry the games that you want, and Waco does, then we can get Waco for you with the right antenna, but it will be larger and costlier.

The Austin stations are pretty powerful in your location, based on your TVFool.com report: you would need only a small antenna like a Winegard HD-7694P or an AntennaCraft HBU-33. I always recommend mounting the antenna on the roof, as attic installations are not reliable or predictable. Put up one of those antennas, follow the installation manual that I linked to you below, and you'll see all of the Austin stations without any problems at all.
