HDTV on my sailboat

Postby skipperbob40 on Wed Jan 21, 2009 8:33 pm

I am in Charleston, sc on my sailboat. I picked up a Toshiba HDTV which had good reception with just some rabbit-ears. I did not like the sound ,though, so I exchanged it for an Insignia (Bestbuy store brand) and get generally poor reception (unwatchable because it drops out so much). Tried bigger rabbit-ears (better but no cigar), a square indoor amplified antenna (even worse when amplifier was on). My boat stays oriented in the same direction right now but who knows what the future will bring. Are all TV tuners created equal or do I need a more expensive TV. Will a better antenna make up for a cheaper tuner. I'm sure a better antenna would help either way, just trying to figure if it will even solve the problem period before I go down that road too far. thanks

Some folks mount a special marine TV antenna on top of their mast so they can get Tv reception on the go. The extra altitude of the mast should make for decent reception...not to mention getting the antenna out of the cabin and into the outdoors. Multipath, reflected TV signal, isn't much of a problem on the ocean, as there is nothing out there to reflect the signal...
