hard to pick an antenna

Postby hardantennapicker on Fri Jul 17, 2009 1:53 am

I am having a hard time picking a replacement antenna. I live in town of the 51040 zip code. Right now, I get Sioux City OK, but we have issues with Omaha. When it was analog, they came in great. I am using a Channel Master Quantum 1162A with a unknown Channel Master preamp that is about 30 feet up in the air, and it always got the Sioux City channels from the back side of it. So it is always pointed south. We do have trees all over and a water tower a few blocks away.

I have been wondering if there is an antenna that we could get a rid of the preamp because it is causing power issues in the house or do we need to get a new preamp.

We are looking at the Winegard HD9032 or the Winegard HD9095.

Replace the preamplifier and the coaxial cable first. Some CM Quantum antennas had preamplifiers that fit in a special housing inside the antenna itself. If you can get me the preamp model number, I can tell you what you have. It should be printed on the back of the preamp power supply inside the house. In any event, expect to have to turn the antenna in the direction that the transmitters lie if you want to get TV reception

We tried a new preamp and wire, but it did not help channel 15-1 and 15-2. It did help keep in the other channels to stay in tho.

Channel 15 would normally be a very hard TV station to get for you, as it lies 67 miles from you. If that station is important to you, replace the Channel master Quantum Antenna (which has to be more than 15 years old) with a deep-fringe UHF antenna like an AntennasDirect XG-91, which is about the most powerful UHF antenna currently available. Since you also have several VHF TV stations available, you should also install a VHF-hugh-band yagi antenna like a Winegard YA-1713 VHF antenna so you will have all-channel capability .

As far as I know, I only have one VHF station that is around here. It is channel 9-1 and 9-2 out of Sioux City. Channel 12-1, 12-2, and 12-3 are not very important since I have 27-1, 27-2, and 27-3.

WEll, none of the UHF only stations are going to get ANY of the VHF stations in your area reliably...you will NEED a VHF-high-band antenna as well as a separate UHF antenna.

I knew that. I was thinking of getting a green VHF/UHF or a 30 to 40 mile range antenna for Sioux City and one of the UHF boomer for Omaha and use the CM7777 preamp. Then get a CM0538 combiner to combine them if needed.

Edit: Tonight, 15-1, 15-2, 42-1, and 42-2 are coming in, but not sure how long tho.

You aren't listening...and you will find out when you try to join two antennas aimed in different directions: it doesn't work!

Why do you say that?

I know someone with a four antenna setup, one for Sioux City, one for Norfolk, and two for Omaha. He does not have any issues. I know other people with dual antenna setups without issues.

What is the issue with dual and even with quad antennas?

Edit: Plus, there is a store that sells a dual antenna setup. The Super Sioux is sold at the Pflanz Zone. Here is the link to their site's ad for it: http://pflanzzone.com/ssant/SiouxperSioux.gif. I have seen it in person too, but they say it will not work down here because it is cut for Sioux Falls and Sioux City.
