Grounding a Tower

Postby pborg on Wed Sep 03, 2008 11:52 am

I have a 30 ft. tower for my antenna. The tower base is two feet into the ground. I also connected a 6 awg copper cable from the tower to an 8 ft. ground rod. Do I need to also run a ground wire to the antenna or the rg 6 cable?

By definition, an antenna mast or tower that is mounted 2 feet into the ground IS grounded, however you may also want to ground your coaxial cable at the point of entry into the house with a coax ground adapter and a 4' grounding rod to shunt off some of the static discharge that could enter the house via the coaxial cable.

From my experience you do not need to ground the antenna, but putting a couple more ground rods around the base(seperate attachments to tower) of the tower would help disperse any energy traveling down the tower even if the base is ground. Technically it all depends on the soil and moisture. The RG6 drop will need bonded to the power ground at entry into the house. If the ground block is inside it will avoid moisture getting into the connectors.
