7 foot dish antenna

Postby willy on Thu Aug 20, 2009 5:44 pm

I have a 7 foot UHF dish antenna that I took down a few years ago. It is in good condition but needs a little TLC. I used a pre amp and line amp, reception was excellent. I had a very good signal from 130 miles (Philidelphia ch 29 to zip 17202). I DXed ch 18 from Hartford Conn. and ch 15 from Norfolk VA. I am considering cleaning it up an putting it on a 40 foot tower. I would go with a new pre amp and line amp. First - is it worth doing? Second - any idea how it would rate on the color code system?

it sounds as if you have a Channel Master 4251 7' parabolic, which was the best UHF antenna of it's day. It's certainly worth ressurecting, if you do it properly. Since it's such a monster, and it's also VERY directional, I would use a ham-type rotator with it, since the current crop of lightweight rotators wouldn't last very long trying to support than antenna. Look at the Hy-Gain AR-40 rotator, which is about $300.00, but it's about the cheapest rotator that will support that antenna. As for a preamp, it's hard to say what to use without knowing how many strong local UHF TV stations you have. If you have spme strong local stations, try a Winegard HDP-269. if there are no strong local UHF stations nearby, try a Channel Master Titan 7777.
