Don't worry Kim, there are many people in the exact same boat as you are. My personal opinion is that HDTV is a major upgrade over what you currently have. Depending on how you look at it though, it probably is not quite as good as some people make it out to be.
The biggest difference you will notice if you get a HDTV will be in the quality of cable, satellite, or your local channels if they broadcast in HD. Simply put, HD broadcasts completely blow away a standard broadcast of normal TV. The HD quality is not quite as good as a Blu-Ray picture, but is nearly as good. Where as the standard broadcast is almost always of worse quality than DVD. The difference between the 2 is much like comparing DVD to VHS. It's just light years better with a HD broadcast.
The difference between a DVD and a Blu-Ray however is much more subtle. The colors tend to stand out better (I would use the phrase that they 'Pop out at you'). The other difference is not always apparent to everybody's eyes. Blu-Ray will show much more detail as far as the backround goes. It's not very noticable though unless you're sitting close enough to your TV to see it though. There are quite a few charts listing how close you need to be from your TV in order to get the best experience from your HDTV.
