Existing Antenna in Attic - What Shoud I do?

Postby MkyMous on Sun Apr 27, 2008 7:03 pm

I currently do not subscribe to any cable or sattelite TV. Don't want to in the future either.
We have a large antenna in the attic and can receive all local channels very well. (NBC, CBS, ABC, PBS, Fox, etc.)
I purchased a HDTV tuner and connected it, but only received a "No Signal avaialble - redirect antenna and rescan".
Do I have to adjust the antenna if I currently receive all the channels? or what do I need to do?
Thanks
Brice

Not sure I understand the question. What kind of TV do you have? Is it digital or analog? What local channels do you receive now - digital or analog? If you have a digital TV receiving digital channels (presumably with a built-in tuner), why do you need an external tuner?

Assuming it is an analog TV, and you can receive all analog local channels very well, how exactly do you connect an HDTV tuner to it? Do you use an analog output of the tuner? Or did you mean "HD converter" (converting digital-to-analog) device?

Please, clarify this a little bit.

MkyMouse,

First of all, let me say that everything that hdtvlabs ask you, are valid questions, you need to know that, but, let me add an item concerning the “adjusting” you mentioned.
You said "large antenna", that can be a plus or minus !

A very large Antenna, could be directional, maybe VERY directional, and the Bandwidth may be too narrow, to efficiently receive the Digital signals, and of course your Antenna should have UHF capability.

Those days of “pointing” an antenna are about to be over. Analog could deal with the “general direction”, but, if you’re off enough, Digital Signals can just drop off, and appear not to be there at all, so….

You should go to one of the following sites....
CEA Antenna Tower Locator:
http://antennaweb.org/aw/Address.aspx
Broadcast Stations Tower Locator:
http://www.2150.com/broadcast/default.asp
TVFool Website Tower Locator:
http://www.tvfool.com/

then enter your address, zip, state, and print out the locations of the digital stations. If you live in a large city, you may need to click on just the Digital information which eliminates the Analog stations. Look at the Azimuth of the stations you are interested in, THEN, get a Compass, and check the aiming direction of your Antenna. Then of course, do a scan, and see know how that works.

Have a good Day !
S.W.
