DTV converter/analog VCR problem

Hi.
I just hooked up my old analog VCR (off a DTV converter box) to a new digital TV and only get a black and white picture through this setup, with live or recorded signal.

The DTV converter box worked fine when hooked up to the old analog TV.
Rooftop antenna > coax > splitter > coax > DTV converter box > coax > VCR > composite cable > input on tv.

The tv works great by itself. I'm stumped on the b&w only when the VCR is used. Any ideas?

It looks like something peculiar with the tv inputs, and not a DTV issue.

DVD player or VCR in "component 1 input" = color picture.
DVD player or VCR in "component 2 input" = black & white.
