Can I use an amplified antenna without amplifier?

Postby jfb on Tue Mar 30, 2010 9:13 am

I'm close to center city philadelphia (19146) in a two story brick row home with 1 TV. It seems that a Winegard MS-1000 (non-amplified) antenna would be a good choice for me, although the MS-2000 (amplified) is cheaper and in-stock on Amazon. I'm close enough to the towers so that amplifying would probably do more harm than good. My question is: can I buy the amplified antenna and turn off the amplifier or disable it somehow? Thanks.

Neither antenna would be my choice, as they won't do low-band VHF very well at all, and WPVI is on digital channel 6. I would look at a Winegard HD-7015 aimed into the middle of the spread of transmitters in Roxborough, and you'll do better for less money and with no amplifier worries
